Radio Stadtfilter
December 9 2012 – January 20 2013
The city of Winterthur is laden with creative potential that leads to a wide range of cultural initiatives. One of them is Radio Stadtfilter. Since its foundation in 2005, the local radio station has remained close to the ideas of independent culture and stands for a broad and open-minded approach to cultural values. For the show at Kunsthalle, Dominik Dusek from Radio Stadtfilter has created a one-hour broadcast; a narrative sound-cloud that combines highlights from the archive with recent recordings.
In the main hall, an old fashioned radio is broadcasting this special programme; in the smaller hall it is played synchronically, but combined with an edit of video recordings that were made by first year students from the film department at the F+F School in Zurich. They followed the radio makers during the production of new programmes and filmed them at work.
As another special feature, second year students from the film department are contributing seven videos based on the very same radio programme. They were given different sequences identical in length and without knowing the filmed material already made by the first year students, they had to come up with an individual visualisation. The show at Kunsthalle is the result of an experiment; an experiment that demonstrates the merits of Radio Stadtfilter and its creative makers, but at the same time looks into the strength of acoustics and their relationship to the image, be it fictional or real.
