Lisa Biedlingmaier
mem - of being light and liquid
July 11 – September 5 2021
Lisa Biedlingmaier (b.1975 in Tscheljabinsk, lives and works in Zurich), structures the two exhibition rooms at Kunsthalle Winterthur as a dialectic between the conscious in the main hall, and the unconscious in the small hall. In the brightly lit main hall, a site-specific installation consists of various ropes, ballet barres and mirrors. Despite their normal function in a would-be dance studio, these elements are installed in unpractical positions; the ballet barres do not provide any support and the mirrors are installed high on the walls, so that they enlarge the space but do not reflect the visitors. As an ensemble the room has a dysfunctional atmosphere, leaving the audience alone in their decision of whether to physically engage with the installation or not.
In the darkly lit small hall, a variety of works are installed: A 6-channel-audio piece includes so called “energetic codes” (a system of vocal sounds meant as an energy healing method, developed by the Spanish therapist Elisa Carbajo Pereda) sung by the artist, dripping noises and sounds of the gong; laser-cut Plexiglas panels hang from the ceiling, combined with a ballet of light beams, dancing over the room, creating reflections and shadow-plays through the entire installation. This dense and active setting is completed by eight radio plays, written by Biedlingmaier together with the international artist group M.Paradoxa on occasion of the exhibit and also available as a take-away poster. The stories are diverse reflections and narrations on the idea that even the most disparate things that on first sight look completely independent, are interconnected. Lisa Biedlingmaier’s work explores the unexpected and sometimes absurd interdependencies that are inherently elusive but also crucial to being in between.
